A belated update, since I was busy all day at school. This morning, Hong Kong's Chief Executive CY Leung, known as the Chinese government's puppet, issued a statement.

"Occupy Central founders had said repeatedly that if the movement is getting out of control, they would call for it to stop. I'm now asking them to fulfil the promise they made to the society, and stop this campaign immediately."

He also added that the protesting caused unnecessary confusion and delays - which is the whole point of a protest. The people have refused to back down and have stayed put ever since this morning. In the image above, the umbrella has now been adopted as a symbol of the Occupy Central movement, due to the public's use of them to shield their bodies when police utilised tear gas and pepper spray in attempts to drive them back.

It's currently 7:30PM and judging from the noises emanating from outside my windows, a thunderstorm is beginning. Thank goodness for the umbrellas them!

Thanks for posting these updates, it's way better than getting information from the filtered media.

To be honest my first reaction was that you were talking about the CEO of Heckler & Koch, and that things had gotten bad overnight.

Not that my opinion matters, but I am glad that the citizens are standing their ground.

CEO? Is Hong Kong a giant privately held Corporation?

any updates on the guy who drove at high speed into protesters? The last I heard about him was when he was ranting/trying to justify how he needed to get some place urgently to meet someone. Either he's a stupid or there's something behind this...

Ah yes - 1AM last night, some impatient twat in a Merc decided to ram through the crowd. I believe injuries were sustained and he's currently being charged with dangerous driving, although I personally believe it should be a reckless charge.

That's because technically, HK is not a country, it's a SAR (Special Administrative Region). It was ceded to China from Britain back in 1997 and operates on the curious method of "one country, two systems" - the Chinese government being one, the HK government being another. This, Hong Kong does not have a standard parliamentary government - instead, a board of directors creates government policy and the Chief Executive executes these policies. At least I think this is how it works, because IMO, the whole SAR mechanism is key to this entire issue.

It's complicated, but a president or a mayor or a governor—those are all just executive positions. We call the US President our "Chief Executive" all the time. CEO doesn't have to be corporate.

But the reason we don't just call them 'CEOs' is because unlike a corporate officer, they are subject to periodic elections. We can replace them if we don't like them. The only people who can remove a CEO are the board of directors. The workers beneath him don't get a vote. Is the HK CEO similarly insulated?
